There have been many confusion when we use ‘a lot of’ and ‘plenty of’. The usage can confusing when they both have similar meaning but the application would be different. Please go through the material to compare and distinguish the usage of a lot of and plenty of.

These expressions have similar meanings to the determiners much, many and most, but the grammar is not quite the same. Of is used after these expressions even before nouns with no determiner.

Compare:

Plenty of shops open on Sunday mornings. (NOT Plenty shops …)
Many shops open on Sunday mornings. (NOT Many of shops …)
There is not a lot of rice left. (NOT There is not a lot rice left.)
There is not much rice left. (NOT There is not much of rice left.)

A lot of and lots of

These are rather informal. There is not much difference between a lot of and lots of. They are both used mainly before singular uncountable and plural nouns, and before pronouns. When a lot of/lots of is used before a plural subject, the verb is plural.

Plenty of

Plenty of means ‘enough and more’. It is used before singular uncountable and plural nouns.

These expressions are rather formal. A large amount of and a great deal of are generally used before uncountable nouns.

Global Warming and the Sea SPM 2012

Read up this article in the science daily. It is regarding the impact of over emission of Carbon Dioxide and how the sea acts as a buffer to absorb excessive carbon dioxide emission. The study shows that the more the sea absorb the carbon dioxide, the higher the acidic value in the ocean water. Habitat will destroy and natural chemistry in the sea water will change. We are not sure what will happen next but scientist are not sitting around doing nothing to prevent this from happening. Scientist predict that the increase of carbon dioxide will heat up the Earth by FIVE FOLD over a millennium.

Scientists studied the impact that current carbon emissions have on the delicate balance between air and sea carbon exchange. They found that the ocean’s ability to store excessive amounts of carbon dioxide over thousands of years will affect the long-term heating of the planet.

The ocean acts as an enormous carbon sink which naturally absorbs any extra carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere. Its ability to store more carbon dioxide than both the atmosphere and land provides long-term storage for the carbon dioxide emitted by human activities.

Professor Ric Williams, from the University’s School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, explains: “It is accepted that rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations lead to an increase in heating around the globe. It was, however, unclear as to how the ocean’s ability to store carbon could affect the future overall heating of the earth.

“The excessive amount of carbon in the atmosphere will make the oceans more acidic and hamper the ability of the oceans to absorb further carbon from the atmosphere. The extra carbon dioxide remaining in the atmosphere will lead to an increase in the overall heating of our planet, making sea levels rise and exacerbating the melting of the Arctic ice caps.

Beberapa hari kebelakangan ini, orang ramai mula heboh memperkatakan mengenai fenomena ponteng sekolah di kalangan pelajar. Isu ini mula mendapat tempat di media massa apabila Pengarah Pelajaran sebuah negeri membuat kenyataan bahawa separuh daripada pelajar di sebuah sekolah ponteng pada hari Khamis dan Jumaat. Isu tersebut semakin mendapat perhatian apabila seorang Timbalan Menteri menyatakan bahawa guru yang tidak pandai mengajar menjadi punca utama peningkatan peratusan pelajar yang ponteng sekolah ini ibarat makan gaji buta. Persoalannya, benarkah guru yang tidak pandai mengajar menjadi punca mengapa pelajar ponteng?

Punca utama pelajar ponteng sekolah ialah kurangnya minat untuk bersekolah. Kebanyakan pelajar ini mempunyai pencapaian akademik yang rendah dan mereka juga malas untuk membuat latihan yang diberikan oleh guru dan mereka bukannya ulat buku. Mereka beranggapan bahawa hadir di sekolah merupakan satu bebanan kerana terpaksa belajar dari pagi hingga tengahari di samping terpaksa membuat pelbagai latihan dan kerja rumah yang diberikan oleh guru. Jalan penyelesaian yang dipilih oleh mereka adalah dengan ponteng sekolah. Pelajar dalam kategori ini lazimnya keluar rumah pada waktu pagi dengan memakai pakaian sekolah yang lengkap. Malangnya, destinasi pagi mereka bukan sekolah, sebaliknya mereka berkumpul di mana-mana tempat lain untuk berseronok-seronok. Di kawasan pekan atau bandar, tempat yang menjadi tumpuan utama pelajar seperti ini adalah pusat snuker atau pusat permainan video.

Kurangnya pemantauan ibu bapa yang seperti melepaskan batuk di tangga juga merupakan salah satu faktor yang menyebabkan anak-anak berani untuk ponteng sekolah. Sebilangan ibu bapa sibuk bekerja untuk mencari nafkah tambahan bagi anak-anak mereka sehingga mereka tidak menyedari serta mengambil tahu tentang aktiviti anak-anak mereka di luar rumah. Keadaan menjadi semakin rumit apabila sesetengah ibu bapa enggan datang ke sekolah bagi membincangkan permasalahan anak mereka. Ini menyulitkan lagi proses untuk menangani pelajar-pelajar yang bermasalah seperti ini.

Memang tidak dinafikan bahawa terdapat sesetengah guru yang tidak pandai mengajar atau tidak menunjukkan kesungguhan di bilik darjah sehingga membuatkan pelajar bosan lalu ponteng sekolah. Namun bilangan guru yang bersikap seperti ini sangat kecil. Hal ini dibuktikan oleh Dt. Amirah Latif dan Dr. Adillah Syazwani Khairi, dua orang pensyarah pendidikan di Universiti Malaya dalam kajian mereka tentang punca pelajar ponteng di beberapa buah sekolah di sekitar Lembah Klang. Dalam kajian yang melibatkan 125 orang pelajar yang pernah ponteng sekolah, hanya 10 orang pelajar yang menyatakan bahawa mereka bosan dengan cara pengajaran guru. Lain-lain menyatakan bahawa mereka ponteng kerana kurangnya minat untuk belajar, suka mengikut kawan-kawan dan tidak kurang juga yang melakukan kerja sambilan.

Biar apa pun puncanya pelajar ponteng sekolah, perkara penting yang patut difikirkan adalah cara-cara untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut. Sekiranya keadaan ini dibiarkan berterusan, semakin ramai pelajar yang akan membuat keputusan untuk ponteng sekolah. Ibu bapa perlu memberikan kerjasama yang padu kepada pihak sekolah untuk mengatasi fenomena ini. Ibu bapa tidak seharusnya menyerahkan tanggungjawab untuk membentuk, mendidik serta mengawasi anak-anak mereka kepada pihak sekolah sepenuhnya, tetapi mereka juga harus memainkan peranan dalam mengawasi kegiatan anak mereka di luar sekolah. Jika tidak, anak-anak mereka akan menjadi tidak terkawal dan bebas untuk berkeliaran di luar sekolah.

Kesimpulannya, fenomena ponteng sekolah bukanlah satu gejala yang tidak boleh ditangani. Dengan adanya kerjasama yang kukuh dan padu daripada semua pihak, sudah pasti gejala ini akan berkurangan ibarat bulat air kerana pembetung, bulat manusia kerana muafakat. Semua pihak khasnya ibu bapa, pihak sekolah, pihak PIBG, serta masyarakat sekeliling harus menggembleng tenaga dan bersatu padu untuk mengurangkan gejala ponteng sekolah ini.

To evaluate your child, we have come up with a systematic program where students can benefit and improve math almost more than 50% within a month of drill classes. Methodology to Improve within a month!! It takes a little effort but it is all worth your time if you are keen to improve. This method will be helpful for those students in standard 4.

Provide exercises of Addition and Subtraction. Time your child. Ensure he can calculate with speed. Provide 50 questions and time him to finish it within 30 minutes. Addition and subtraction should be simple . eg (124+ 254). Start off with numbers less than 1000.
Once he/she mastered Addition and Subtraction, start off with Multiplication. Parents and teachers are required to train their student/child to memorized multiplication table (2….12)
The memorizing will probably takes up more than one week to deal with.
Test your child in multiplication of single number (eg . 4 x 10 , 3 x 3 or 5 x
Once he is good with multiplication, you should introduce double digit multiplication. (eg 12 x 23, 34 x 13 or 4 x 23)
Drill multiplication table for additional 2-3 weeks.
WHEN HE IS READY FROM STEP 1-6 THEN YOU CAN START INTRODUCING DIVISION,FRACTION AND DECIMAL)
